Japanese Painted Fern Hanging Basket

The Japanese Painted Fern (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum) is a highly decorative, shade-loving perennial fern celebrated for its striking multi-colored foliage.

Named the 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year, it features graceful, arching, triangular fronds beautifully variegated with silvery-green, dusty purple, and metallic gray tones against contrasting burgundy-red stems.

All Green Thumbs Nursery has added several new shrubs to the line up.

The Ilex Soft Touch and Ilex Carissa are evergreen and very compact. Perfect to add some green to a corner of the deck or patio.
Both Ilex ‘Soft Touch’ (Japanese Holly) and Ilex ‘Carissa’ (Chinese Holly) are popular, dense evergreen shrubs used to create low-maintenance mounds or hedges. While they share a similar rounded shape and deep green color, they have distinct differences in leaf texture, hardiness, and overall appearance.

The Clethra Hummingbird is also a compact shrub that would do nicely in a patio pot.
For a splash of color, the Echinacea Powwow Wild Berry is a show stopper and the Day Lilies are spectacular and very bright and cheery.
Most could be grown in larger decorator pots on a deck or tucked into a corner of the yard.  There are some smaller shrubs that would make excellent patio pots.

Clethra alnifolia ‘Hummingbird’ (commonly known as Summersweet or Sweet Pepperbush)

Clethra alnifolia, commonly called summersweet, is a deciduous shrub that is native to swampy woodlands, wet marshes, stream banks and seashores, often in sandy soils, along the coast from Maine to Florida and west to Texas. It is a rounded, suckering, densely-branched, deciduous shrub that typically grows to 3-6’ (less frequently to 8’) tall and is noted for producing a mid to late summer bloom of sweetly fragrant white flowers which appear in narrow, upright panicles (racemes to 2-6″ long). Flowers give way to dark brown seed capsules (1/8″ diameter) which may persist into winter. Mature stems have scaly, dark gray to brown black bark. Serrate, obovate to oblong, glossy dark green leaves (to 3-4” long) turn variable but generally attractive shades of yellow to golden brown in fall. Flowers are very attractive to butterflies and bees.
